Cant playback tapes on my panasonic mini DV video camera?

I have a panasonic mini DV video recorder and i have been trying to play back some tapes from about 6 years ago. it plays them back without sound ann there are stips of the slides from the video across the screen and when I plug the camera into my tv, it does the same thing but without color. why is it doing this and how can i fix it?
